Spelling

Hello Gerdean-

I am beginning to encounter the lessons that are in your edited collection. However, a question arises in the enclosed lesson due to your use of two spellings of the teacher Alcon (Alkon). Would you double check on your end, and let me know what you think is correct.

Gratefully,

Rob

Oh, dear. I didn't realize there was a conflict. It's Bill Kelly's personal teacher. Let me see if I can nail it down. Thanks.

I have decided to use Alkon as it is what is used primarily. Only in the heading is the spelling Alcon used. If you find cause to reverse that decision, let me know.

The correct spelling is ALCON.

Thank you.

What is the evidence you rely upon?--rdavis 16:47, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

I looked it up in my hard copy of Pocatello lessons, in which Bill Kelly himself says: "This is my personal teacher, Alcon." Then Alcon says: "I am Alcon. Good morning." etc. And it came out of the Pocatello group. Bill himself probably typed it.

Information closest to the source carries the most weight. Your records suggest the spelling Alcon, but before every reference to Alkon is changed, I will want to confer with Bill's family. In any event, typos are inherent in any written communication, but for the record, I would like to insert the pertinent reference to the "Pocatello lessons" that "Bill himself probably typed" omitting reference to his biographic details.--rdavis 22:07, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

I called Nancy Kelly and left a message for her to call me if she has any information regarding this matter.--rdavis 23:10, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Bob and Rob,

I listened to both of your voice mail messages when I got home late last night regarding the spelling of my father’s teacher’s name. I thought it was with a “k” but my mother thinks it is with a “c.” So it doesn’t surprise me that the written record from the early years has it both ways.

In the early years, I was the transcriber for the TR Practice Sessions; my Dad was the transcriber for the meetings. If the discrepancy arises between those, then I would go with the spelling used in the early meetings.

However, question for Bob!

Bob do you still have the practice sessions that you and Dad did at lunch on Wednesdays? If so, please check the spelling used there. It is probably correct.

I’m copying this to my mother as well!

Peace,

Nancy

Dear Nancy,

Thank you for sharing the memories of you and your mother regarding the name of your father's personal teacher! This only illustrates the uncertainty entailed in reducing sonorous values of presence to the mechanics of language processing. When such applies to the name of a personality, how much more difficult to tame such qualities within a computational code.

If you don't mind, given the preponderance of Alkon in the record, I have created pages for both Alcon and Alkon pointing to the same collection of lessons. To share the full beauty of this human dimension of apparent uncertainty, I have added this correspondence to the discussion page of each page devoted to their names. Let me know if you have any objections.

Gratefully,

Rob

Hi Rob, that works—or, given the preponderance of the use of “Alkon” you could just make the change. I think the use of “Alcon” was a misspelling. Nancy

Follow-on thought….

The use of “Alcon” probably occurred when someone other than my Dad or I did the transcribing and is simply a misspelling. I think the references should all be changed to “Alkon.”

Hello Nancy,

Thank you for giving this some further thought!

With your approval, I could simply delete the Alcon page (along with its discussion) and leave the Alkon page with its discussion page updated with this correspondence. That way, future examinations of this collection can find the reference to Alcon as a sign of our efforts to address the question.

Gratefully,

Rob

That works!

Regarding the spelling of names: Linda should be Lynda. She’s my personal teacher.

Initially I heard her through Debbie and then later on my own; later still I became aware of the spelling with a “y” rather than an “i.”

Thanks for this very great effort!

Nancy

Dear Nancy,

I have now deleted the Alcon page(s). The deletion record points persons to the Alkon page(s) where this correspondence may be found. In the event someone searches for Alcon, I have created a "redirect" which takes them immediately to the Alkon page.

As for Linda, I have deleted that page leaving reference to your recommendation in the deletion log while enclosing your recommendation in the Lynda discussion page. Fortunately, there were only three records attributed to Linda. I corrected all spellings in those lessons to Lynda and reassigned the records to the collection of lessons attributed to Lynda that now number 6 in total.

Let me know if you find other adjustments needed or if you have recommendations.

Gratefully,

Rob
