Commentary

There has been some disagreement among academic Psychomystics as to whether the biological control the Helianx had over their bodies could be considered true shape-shifting. But all concur that the ability must have stemmed from their point of origination in the second of the great superuniverses. Although very little is known of that era it can be assumed that matter, at that point of creation, was more fluid, more easily subject to the control of a powerful mind.

When the Helianx were the sovereigns of their underwater world, they communicated with one another not only through a type of bio-acoustic telepathy, but also by skillfully modifying their bodies both in form and hue. In that way, they believed every nuance of a projected thought could be shaded by a constantly shifting spectrum of color.

Similar in principle to the Earth's plankton, the Helianx were able to convert selected wavelengths of incoming cosmic rays into the energy needed to shepherd their massive bodies through the waters of their home planet. They fed by basking on the surface of the single vast ocean that encircled their world, absorbing the life-giving rays while singing their wild songs and sharing the poetry of Creation. It was a secure, benign and loving existence in which these enormous creatures, cast alone as the sole intelligent beings of their water world, idled away the generations in philosophical speculation.

As was so with the Earth's Cetacea, once the Helianx had developed their environment to an optimum degree they had little need to create complex structures external to themselves. Their inner lives were rich enough. The stability of their existence was ensured by their ability to control their population to maintain a perfectly balanced ecosystem. And by virtue of their passive, photosynthetic approach to feeding, their world was entirely free of predation. The small aquatic creatures living alongside the Helianx fed off the seaweed that grew in all its magnificent profusion covering the rocks in the shallower waters.

Knowing little of fear and freed from the need to hunt for food, or to work for their subsistence, the Helianx had the leisure to develop what has been generally considered as one of the most advanced poetic cultures in the known Multiverse. . Being telepathically bonded into one large clan also allowed the Helianx the ability to receive signals from other worlds as they lay in their magickal configurations on the surface of the water. The silicate crystalline structure of their bodies, resonating as one in their meditations, acted as a single homogenous receiving station linking them to the Universe Broadcast Circuits, and the essential awareness that they were part of a much larger universe than even they could conceive.
